How to effectively use Instagram to grow your business.

Instagram has been around since 2010 and is fast becoming one of the most popular social media platforms today. Used by over 1 billion people across the globe, Instagram has become a powerhouse in the online marketing arena, boasting approximately 25 million business profiles. These businesses now use this rapidly growing social media platform as one of their main sources of user engagement – are you?

As with anything on the online marketing space, it can often be difficult understanding where to start or what to include. To give you a hand, we’ve put together our top tips for Instagram marketing in 2019.

What is Instagram & Why Should Businesses Use It?

At its core, Instagram is a content sharing service allowing users to upload photos and videos, which can be edited and organised with tags and location information. Like Facebook, users have a ‘feed’ which displays recent posts by pages, people and businesses they follow. Content can be ‘liked’ or commented on, as well as bookmarked, or re-shared (also known as ‘regrammed’).

Instagram can be a highly effective tool in generating user engagement and building brand awareness for your product or service. Knowing how to harness the power of Instagram for your business can be a tricky task – let’s get into it…

Tip #1: Switch to a Business Account

Moving from a ‘regular’ Instagram profile to a business account has some clear benefits. For example, users can directly get in touch with you via your contact button right from your Instagram page. Having a business profile also allows you to create and publish paid advertising through Instagram ads, without needing to use Facebook Ads Manager. Another great perk to having a business account is your ability to schedule and automatically post content via third party applications such as Hootsuite.

Tip #2: Post Simple Product Photos

Instagram is a fantastic place to advertise your products and encourage users to purchase. Posting the right content, in the right manner, will urge users to click through to your website to find out more information. Simple product photos are a fantastic example of ‘selling’ your products in a way that gently introduces them to users and creates engagement while avoiding being over the top. Here is a great example of how effective product photos can promote your products while generating some engagement in users.

Tip #3: Instagram Advertising

Creating sponsored ads gives brands the opportunity to target audiences in multiple ways. Prior to Instagram ads, companies could only show their brand and products to people who followed their page. Now, with Instagram ads, businesses can promote to anyone who fits their target audience. When setting up the ad, you’ll have full control over everything; spend, placements, audience and type of ad (single photo or carousel). Below are the current forms/placements of paid advertising offered by Instagram:

The key with paid advertising is to keep content engaging while appealing to your ads specific target audience.

Tip #4: Use Instagram Stories

Finally, businesses should be using Instagram stories. Taking a leaf out of Snapchat’s book, Instagram introduced stories in 2016 and since then, they’ve added enormous value to the platform. Instagram stories are only live for 24 hours and differ from normal posts because they come in a slideshow format. Located at the top of a user’s mobile app, stories are often the first thing people ‘scroll’ through when using Instagram. The possibilities for businesses using stories are endless. Post behind-the-scenes content of your production line of a new product, or experiment with different kinds of content (live photos, product launches, Boomerangs etc…). Stories are a little less formal and are an easy way to generate page engagement.

In summary, Instagram is fast becoming a powerful tool for businesses to increase their user engagement, advertise products or services and encourage customers to purchase. Correctly leveraging the tools Instagram has on offer will see your business build a strong online presence in the social media world.
